You'll love the heady flavors in this version of the classic Spanish drink. It's a good make-ahead option for entertaining; add the club soda just before serving.
Yield: 8 servings (serving size: 1 cup)
Ingredients
- 1 (750-milliliter) bottle merlot or other red wine, chilled and divided
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 sachet Mulling Spice Blend
- 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (about 1 large orange)
- 1 (16-ounce) bag frozen unsweetened strawberries
- 1/2 orange, thinly sliced and cut in half
- 1 (12-ounce) can club soda
Preparation
1. Combine 1 cup wine, sugar, and sachet in a small saucepan; bring to a simmer. Cook 5 minutes. Remove from heat; cool. Discard sachet. Pour mixture into a pitcher; add remaining 3 cups wine. Chill thoroughly. Add juice, strawberries, orange slices, and club soda.

Served with seafood paella at a family gathering. It was deemed the best sangria ever and the recipe quickly disappeared. The mulled spiced base deepened the flavors. Adding the frozen strawberries just before serving really helped keep the wine chilled. To kick up the flavor I used lemon - lime sparkling water and added a splash of Triple Sec and Lemon Vodka. Can't wait for a chance to make this again.01/17/10

This recipe was a hit at my girls night party. I used mulling spices that I had on hand. I also tripled the recipe and put it into a punch bowl. I used inexpensive cabernet.12/07/08
