Edit Note

Nuts are considered a quality protein, and they offer plenty of good-for-you fats along with some fiber. According to the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid 1/2-ounce portion counts as one serving of protein. Serve as a snack, or sprinkle over salad greens for a sweet and crunchy topper.

Yield: 2 cups (serving size: 2 tablespoons or 1/2 ounce)

Ingredients

  • 1  large egg white
  • 1  teaspoon  water
  • 2  cups  pecan halves
  • 1/2  cup  sugar
  • 1  teaspoon  ground cinnamon
  • 1/2  teaspoon  ground allspice
  • 1/8  teaspoon  freshly ground black pepper
  • Cooking spray

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 250°.

2. Combine egg white and 1 teaspoon water in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk until frothy. Stir in pecans. Add sugar and remaining ingredients except cooking spray, tossing to coat. Spread nut mixture on a jelly-roll pan coated with cooking spray. Bake at 250° for 45 minutes or until dry, stirring once. Cool completely.
