The Classic Hot Brown
Texas toast is made from extra-thick slices of white bread and is usually sold with other breads. Some people add tomatoes to this hot layered sandwich.
Yield: 6 servings
Ingredients
- 6 (2-ounce) slices Texas toast, lightly toasted
- 12 ounces thinly sliced cooked turkey breast
- 12 (1/4-inch-thick) slices tomato (about 2 tomatoes)
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- Cheddar Cheese Sauce
- 2 bacon slices, cooked and crumbled
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
Preparation
Preheat broiler. Arrange toast in a 13 x 9-inch baking pan or baking dish. Top each toast slice with 2 ounces turkey and 2 tomato slices; sprinkle with pepper. Spoon Cheddar Cheese Sauce evenly over tomatoes, and sprinkle with bacon and paprika. Broil until lightly browned.

I was not at all impressed. My boyfriend was not so happy that I used his leftover turkey for this recipe. Leftover turkey on sandwhich bread with mayo tastes better. Also, does not look much like the picture.01/23/05

I would not try this imposter the first time. The Hot Brown is a classic sandwich which is in a class by itself. It is not made the way this imposter describes it. I know what I speak having the original recipe from the Hotel who invented it. Texas toast, what a joke, it should be a home style white bread and not thick texas sliced. Where did they come up with Texas? The cheese sauce is an insult to this superb culinary delight. It is not made with cheddar chesse. Ouch! it is made with Romano. there is no cheese sauce on the original. come on give us a break. Call it a sandwich and let it go at that. IT IS NOT A CLASSIC HOT BROWN. Wanta Bet?05/01/04
