Yield: 9 servings

Ingredients

  • 1/2  cup  all-purpose flour
  • 1/4  cup  granulated sugar
  • 1/4  cup  packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4  cup  chilled butter or stick margarine, cut into small pieces
  • 3  tablespoons  slivered almonds, toasted
  • 7  cups  sliced peeled Granny Smith apple (about 3 pounds)
  • 1/3  cup  amaretto (almond-flavored liqueur) or apple juice

Preparation

Preheat oven to 375°.

Lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Combine flour and sugars in a bowl; cut in butter with a pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture is crumbly. Add almonds; toss well.

Combine apple and amaretto in a bowl; toss well. Spoon apple mixture into an 8-inch square baking dish or 1 1/2-quart casserole. Sprinkle with crumb mixture. Bake at 375° for 45 minutes or until golden brown.

Very good, but I'd make a few changes: I think the filling needs a little vanilla added with the amaretto. I agree with the person who said that 3 lbs was too much. I cut my finger before I finished peeling apples, so I stopped at about 2.5 lbs, and that was good--I don't think I'd do any more. The almonds are wonderful in the topping.04/23/07

I love amaretto and thought it complimented the apples really well. Great warm out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.03/07/06
